Brittany Torrence
Rule 9 Limited Practice Legal Intern / Law Student
WHO I AM
Brittany is a rising third-year law student at Seattle University School of Law. Brittany graduated Whitman College in 2014 with a B.A. in History and a Minor in Art History.
Brittany has experienced a variety of legal work. From her work with the Foreclosure and Mediation Outreach Project (FMOP), and related projects, she learned a new subject area from scratch, gained valuable leadership skills, and showed marked improvement in her work project with each new assignment. For instance, in collaboration with the Northwest Justice Project and Tacoma Volunteer Legal Services, which assists distressed homeowners and tenants in Pierce County, Brittany was responsible to coordinate student volunteers who did the initial client interview, she assisted me with training, data collection, monthly reports, and acted as a liaison between me and clinic staff. One challenge the clinic faced was recruiting an adequate number of student volunteers because the commute to Tacoma in rush hour traffic was a deterrent and many students preferred more local pro bono opportunities. Due to Brittany’s enthusiasm, she single-handedly overcame this challenge by recruiting a number of FMOP’s best volunteers from her 1L class. Brittany also helped to make sure that attorney volunteers at the clinic were set up for success by drafting a “New to Foreclosure Guide”. The guide was designed to orient new volunteers to the clinic as well as provide an introduction to foreclosure law in WA. We worked on this guide for over a year and went through many drafts. Brittany showed that she is responsive to feedback and the final result was something we were both proud of. In fact, we were able to use the guide as materials for a CLE for new attorneys interested in volunteering at the clinic. In addition, Brittany routinely made suggestions on how the clinic could be improved and took steps to help me implement new policies.
Brittany is also very active in law school student organizations which shows that she is committed to both service and diversity—values that I know your office embodies. Brittany took the lead in organizing several on campus events including the Black Law Student Association’s 2016 Black Graduation, a ‘Black Lives Matter’ panel and discussion with professors, community members and students, and she authored a scholarly publication on the ‘Use of Force’ by police departments in the Seattle Journal for Social Justice.
Brittany currently serves as the WRBLSA PNW Sub-regional director, the Community Service Director for SU's BLSA chapter, and is an Article Editor for the Seattle Journal for Social Justice.
